Thanks to the generosity of Zondervan publishers, Biblical Foundations is having another giveaway of Andreas Kostenberger’s new book. A Theology of John’s Gospel and Letters introduces the first volume in the BTNT series. The volume not only furnishes an exhaustive theology of John’s Gospel and letters, but also provides a detailed study of major themes and relates them to the Synoptic Gospels and other New Testament books. D. A. Carson says about the book that “for the comprehensiveness of its coverage in the field of Johannine theology (gospel and letters), there is nothing to compare to this work.”

  1. Hi, thanks for making this giveaway available one more time! We are actually teaching through the Gospel of John right now for our college/young adults and I have no doubt this would be a great addition to our pastoral staff’s library while we teach through this book. We’ve definitely benefited a lot from Dr. Kostenberger’s commentary, so hopefully we can win this one!

    Thanks again.
    Mike S.

  2. As a first year seminarian, I am sure that I will utilize the book both in my studies at school and in my personal study after ordination. Resources like this are of great value when preparing a sermon or Bible study. I especially look forward to the study of major themes and their relationship to the Synoptics.

Thank you and God bless you.

  3. My name is Eric Roseberry and I am an Acts 29 church planter in Lafayette, IN. I began preaching through the gospel of John this September and we will conclude in May. I currently live off of outside support and we do not have much money for resources. This book would be incredibly helpful for my sermon preparation as I lead the new church, and outside of receiving a free copy I cannot currently afford it. Thanks for the time.

  4. Hello,
If I were to receive a copy of “A Theology of John’s Gospel and Letters” I would begin to incorporate the readings into the year and a half long series I am in the midst of right now on the Gospel According to John for the congregation I pastor. I would also be using it for a continuing development of materials I’ve been working on for about 8 years now on The Revelation. This would of course all be pastoral in nature, though I am also working on several articles for publication in two different journals (where this might prove helpful to my theses).

    Thank you,

    Rick Wadholm

  5. I have been a long time student of reformed thinking and theology and now that I am past the halfway point in my life and suffering from cancer, I feel a need to enhance my thinking and knowledge so that I can more efectively pass on biblical truths to those that are arround me and those that minister to me. I am deeply concnered that ‘we’ are losing biblical truths and I firmly believe that John’s Gospel is a critical resource for this world and in particular for a shared faith. God has given me illness as an opportunity to reflect on his grace and this book would help me do that and also teach it…. thanks Bill

  6. My focus of study and teaching for many years has been on the Jewish backgrounds to the Synoptic Gospels. I would benefit I’m sure by examining Kostenberger’s links between John’s writings and the Synoptics.

  7. Since John’s gospel was writen so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name (John 20:31), I believe a better understanding of the theology of this, and thus should allow me to better serve those around me who do not know the Lord by painting a more accurate picture of Him.

  8. flatirons_bldr@yahoo.com — I would use this to great advantage both for my current studies in exegesis at Wheaton College and for my role as a translation consultant with SIL.

  9. This looks very exciting and the recommendation of C A Carson is worthy of note. I am retired (74) but still active in ministry, study and reading.
Today is my birthday so this would be a great gift!
    Thanks, Ron H.

  10. “ANOTHER BOOK GIVEAWAY”
This looks very exciting and the recommendation of C A Carson is worthy of note. I am retired (74) and when you receive this I will be celebrating my 74th birthday-a great birthday gift. Thanks Ron H.

  11. As a seminary student who is about to move to Central Asia to work cross-culturally, having a resource such as this would be very beneficial for forming my understanding and appreciation of the New Testament. John is one of my favorite biblical writers and Kostenberger is one of my favorite scholars, so needless to say I would be thrilled to have a copy of this book.

  12. Thank you for this drawing. I hope to use this book in my ministry as a theological educator in India upon completion of my doctoral studies.

  13. I am leading a men’s bible study (and men’s ministry) at this moment. We just finished a three-week bible study on John 4. With the help of the ESV study bible, my professor, and a few commentaries at the library, I was able to present the bible study, but not as concise and exhaustive as could have been with this first volume. This will be helpful in in later bible studies.

Also, I am an undergraduate student, and I will be proceeding to acquire a graduate and doctorate degree. I plan to teach as a professor, and this will further help me teach as well with leading a men’s ministry.

As a leader/pastor involved in teaching ministries within my congregation, I believe that this would provide a great resource to me as well as to our wider community. We recently spent a few weeks teaching out of John’s Epistles, and a book geared toward understand the theology of John would be a great asset for our teachers and wider congregation.

  15. Probably I would use it in the Bible study group for supplementing commentaries focused on grammar, syntax and word analysis.

Thanks for giving a chance to register the draw.

  16. First I will read it to provide richer biblical theology in my Sunday School class of hungry sheep. Then I will give it to my pastor, a Reformed Baptist who has to drive a Lay’s potato chip truck but who feeds us richly with Jesus every Lord’s Day (he has been expositionally preaching Hebrews for the last year and a half).

  17. I am a young pastor. I would use it in my message prep to look at the recurring themes as I preach through John.

  18. braindavson@yahoo.com

This book will help me deepen my understanding of the 4th gospel and thereby equip me to better edify both my wife (she and I are reading through the gospel together) and those I have the opportunity to disciple. I have been focusing on the synoptic gospels in my personal study for the past couple years and I am now turning to the Gospel of John.
    thanks,
    Brian Davidson

  19. I will be using this book in my ministry here in the Gatineau region, Quebec; close to the nation’s capital Ottawa. I also teach Homiletics in our Baptist seminary, in Montreal (Sembeq) where I teach the importance of understanding the author’s intent and his message. I hope to use this book in this context, and in my bible studies when I prepare messages.

    Kind regards,

    Normand Joseph, Gatineau, Quebec.
Pastor of Eglise Baptiste Evangelique de Gatineau, Quebec, Canada.

  20. It will be used to enhance my preaching and teaching further equipping our congregation for ministry within and outside the walls of our building.

  21. Hi there,

Thank you for this great opportunity! I am a big fan of Andreas’ work, and already own his volume in the BECNT series. I find John’s gospel to be especially fascinating, as it is so rich theologically. I am currently attending ACTS seminary in Langley B.C., and would love the chance to use this book in my studies, as well as in the care group which I lead. Blessings to you!

  22. I would like to know the word of G-d to its fullest so that when I share it with others I am able to speak truth to them. Truth to me is the most important thing.

  23. I would use this resource to better understand the theology of the NT and communicate that to my students, friends, and family.

  24. personal study

  25. I teach a course on John as an adjunct for Fuller Seminary extension in Houston and I also plan to teach and preach my way through the Gospel of John for the congregation I pastor. I’m the Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Kingwood, Texas a congregation of just over 2000.

  26. I will use this book in my teaching application and Bible study as often as possible.

  27. I have a team of people in my church working through the New Testament to establish a fresh understanding of a Biblical vision of the mission of the church. This book would really aid in our study of John’s literature. I would also use the book to prepare a series of sermons and small group studies on John’s writings. However, the reason I would most like a copy of this book is because these types of writings are like a sweet devotion to me. They really draw me into the text and consequently draw me closer to Christ.

  28. Thanks for the opportunity. I am in Young Life and we consistently preach through the gospels. I personally have done it now for over years, every year, to high school students.

I would love to expand my Biblical Theology understanding. Being in evangelism I would love to understand John’s theme of “belief” in a Biblical theology context.

    Thanks, Sean McGever, M.Div

  29. I’m a pastor to Faroese college and university students, who are studying in Copenhagen, Denmark. Dr. Köstenberger’s commentary would be a great resource in my teaching.

  30. I would use the book to supplement my seminary studies and to prepare my Sunday school lesson for my Young Adult Co-Ed class.

  31. I would like to win to expand my Bibilical knowledge and for it to become orthopraxy in all areas of my life.

    soli Deo gloria!

    jason d.

  32. God used the gospel of John to change my unrepentent, unbelieving heart some 25 years ago.
I love to study his word especially John.
All praise and glory to Him
Thank You and God bless your work
    Sal Esposito

  33. As a seminary student, I am looking to broaden my library for future ministry needs and in order to be more fully equipped for whatever ministry path the Lord would put me in.

  34. Dr. Kostenberger,

I’m an adjunct prof. at a local Christian college. Part of my teaching rotation includes the Gospel of John. Your book would be utilized in my teaching prep. If I don’t get the free copy, I’ll probably buy your book anyway.

    -Thanks

  35. I have looked at several other books by Kostenberger and they come very highly recommended – I would look forward to using this book for sermon preparation and other studies as I complete my M.Div in 2010 and start looking for a church to pastor.

  36. Hi. My name is Michael Harris. I’m part of a large inner-city mission in Chicago, Illinois, called Jesus People USA. It’s also an intentional community. I’d be able to use this book in leading bible study with our discipleship training school, as well as sharing it (in proper communal fashion) with friends and pastors, who could use it to deliver sermons to our church.

  37. I’d love to use this volume to prepare for our jail ministry Bible study on the Gospel of John. Thanks. -LHH

  38. I plan to write a booklet about the gospel of John.

  39. I would definitely use this in my teaching and preaching ministry when teaching from John.

  40. Dr Koestenberger,

Thanks for being bold and giving away copies of your book – if I got a copy it’s be using while teaching and preaching through the Johnnine corpus with my congregation. Well, I already did 1,2,3 John so I missed out on that but I would use it when going through John.

Also, I appreciated reading your book Salvation to the Ends of the Earth – its a great read on the biblical theology of mission!

  41. I will use the book in several ways:

    1. For personal study and research in the Word of God.
    2. To help my family understand the Bible more clearly
    3. To provide research material and quotes for the theological studies at my blog, THEOparadox. Actually, I could have used this book a few weeks ago while discussing John 12. Maybe next time. :)

    Blessings,
    Derek Ashton

  42. Thank you for the opportunity.

I will use this book to help teach people in my Bible study.

  43. I would love to enrich my studies of God’s Word through the use of this book. Thank you for offering this as a giveaway.

  44. I have preached through the themes of the gospel and through the first epistle. I have also taught course in a Bible institute on John 1-12 and would like to expand my notes to cover the entire gospel. This would be a tremendous aid to my future preaching and teaching on John’s writings. Thanks for the opportunity.

  45. I am a full time preacher and full time student working on my MDiv.

  46. I am to begin a series in John’s Gospel in February 2010 and believe that this would be fresh insight as I prepare that series.

  47. My previous comment disappeared, possibly because my intended ministry purpose was not found to be acceptable? If that’s the case, it’s understandable, but please allow me to explain further why I would like to be included in this giveaway.

I attended a Pentecostal Bible College at a very young age, and subsequently spent several years in church planting ministry. I became convinced that I was not Biblically qualified for ministry due to mismanagement of my family and an obvious lack of solid character and sanctification. For the past 11 years, I have devoted myself by God’s grace to development and growth in these areas – in the hope that God may at some time allow me the privilege of leading His flock again.

In the meantime, I’m continuing to study and develop my library. A few years back, my theological perspective changed, and I’m now devouring all the good Reformed scholarship I can get my hands on. Like a kid in a candy store! I’m dying to go to seminary, but devotion to my family and financial constraints make this impossible at the moment.

I’m leading worship and teaching Bible studies in my church, writing a theological blog that has a good following, and preparing my heart and mind for future seminary, full-time ministry, and (hopefully) a teaching post in a Bible college or seminary, (hopefully) on the mission field, training 3rd world pastors who don’t have access to good theological materials. Dr. Kostenberger’s book would be highly valuable to me.

    Thank you for your consideration.

    Grace & peace,
    Derek Ashton

  48. The late Leon Morris introduced me to the wonders of John. However, age and ill health robed Doc Morris of updating his work to meet the need for responsible interaction with current trends and scholarly questions. My hope is Prof.Köstenberger’s study, so highly recommended by D.A. Carson, will do much to promote respect and appreciation of reverent, responsible, evangelical scholarship which is fully conversant with the critical and practical questions raised by a study of John’s theology. It would be a wonderful book to help us open, read and study THE BOOK!

  49. I’m a teacher at a Bible College and would use the book in my lecture prep.

  50. Our church is preaching through 1 John in the new year.
