  1. I plan to use this book to challenge myself to pursue excellence in my scholastic endeavors. I also hope to challenge others to understand that the life of the mind is integral to discipleship.

  2. I’d like to study this book with fellow my fellow deacons. I think that as deacons, if we live lives of excellence, we can better minister to our church, and promote the unity of the Spirit.

  3. I would use the book first for personal use and I’m sure it will naturally spread to others both through my teaching and book recommendations. Dr. Finn says “… I especially hope current collegians and seminarians who are contemplating research doctoral studies will give this book a close reading.” [http://www.biblicalfoundations.org/excellence/]

I am one of those people. I’m a seminary student at SEBTS who started in August 2010. I’m pursuing my M.Div. but I am considering a Ph.D as well. Ultimately I could care less about the academic titles, but I want to be prepared mentally and spiritually for the work God has called me to do: which ultimately I believe is to serve the church through pastoring (specifically preaching/teaching.) I will always have much to learn, whether I stick with just an M.div or somehow got 10 Ph.Ds. My desire is to love Christ and to love His church. And what better way than to actually ‘live’ like Christ. I believe this book will help lead me to Christ, to see my failures, to see Jesus as my righteousness, and to see how His Spirit is at work to conform me to Himself for His glory.

  4. As a father, pastor, and doctoral student, it’s easy to let one of these areas fall behind the other in terms of excellence. Perhaps this book would be of benefit!

  5. If I am chosen as a recipient for this new title, I would enjoy giving it to my pastor. Though, Lord willing, I am also moving in the direction of a pastoral role, I think he could reap more fruit from this book than I. He is quite busy throughout the week with different ministry obligations and I sometimes worry that because of a stretched schedule, “average” teaching begins to assume the place of the dynamic, urgent, earnest, and faithful teaching he desires for his flock. I know from experience that even the most deeply-seated convictions meet a formidable foe in the daily trenches of reality. An afternoon spent dissecting Romans 8 can be derailed by a daughter’s call to fix a flat tire…45 minutes away. I feel this book can both restore and confirm my pastor’s convictions that excellence in ministry is to be passionately pursued.

Now, does it sound contradictory to give my stretched thin, busy, burdened pastor with another book to read? Granted, there may be a some truth in that. However, I feel the fruit which can, and I believe will, result from him working through this book will be immediately picked, eaten, and savored. Thanks for lending ear and for offering this giveaway.

  6. I have already read this outstanding book and am working on a review for the Denver Journal. I have been quite vocal and excited about it, and have frequently wished I had the resources to give one away to someone who I think would read it and benefit from it. So, that is how I would use it if I got the book. _Excellence_ is one I will continually use and refer people to throughout the course of my ministry.

  7. As an African-American church planter/pastor in training, I know that building the current and next generations of men who can serve the Lord and his Church with their lives and particularly their minds, is a calling to excellence. Having read some of Dr. K’s work before, I have little doubt that I will be helped by this new book. I am currently working through “Invitation to Biblical Interpretation” and am blown away by how gracious and yet stimulating it is. Grace and peace to you for your service to the rest of the people of God.

  8. I have this book on my wishlist for a time, allready. Because I really want to meditate on this book for my own ministry as pastor. And after that to help others with excellence.

  9. I am always looking for better ways to teach and be better at it. I believe this book can get me there.

  10. This year I am focusing upon my growth as a leader, especially in the area of discipling other leaders within the church. This book would be an excellent resource in evaluating my own life as look to model biblical leadership to the other men in my church.

  11. I am a psychology and counseling student at NOBTS in New Orleans. I would like to read this book to see how I might incorporate this in the counseling setting. I see many men who are married and engaged in maladaptive behaviors. This could be a resource for me as I mentor men in my internship and later on in my counseling career.

  12. I would use the book to help restore our congregation’s sense of pride in what we can do in and for Christ.

  13. I intend to read the book in hopes of gaining a better understanding of excellence and how it is developed, not only in relation to scholarship but also in the general Christian walk. As a youth pastor, I’d like to encourage our youth toward a pursuit of excellence that mitigates against the prevailing love for the superfluous.

Also, I will add the book to my collection of Dr. Köstenberger’s works.

  14. If I am chosen, I will put this book to use in my walk. I have recently read a book by Dr. Köstenberger called heresy of orthodoxy. I enjoyed that read. I am currently taking classes from Boyce College(SBTS) and I will be a youth minister in May. The books I have read by Dr. Köstenberger have impacted me so much, and if I am chosen this one will do the same.

  15. The title of this book immediately caught my eye since a mentor of mine has been preaching excellence in all I do for years. I would use this book to help me continue my pursuit of excellence on my mission field in Thailand and would share it with those that have invested in me.

  16. I would use this book as a companion text in my seminary studies as well as a way to continue becoming more and better equipped for service in the Body of Christ!

  17. I am an aspiring armchair theologian and this book would be a much needed dose to my sometimes inflated head. Head and heart not head over heart.

  18. I would use your book to obviously persue excellence. The areas that i would seek to improve would be my work as Pastor, my studies at SEBTS and as a follower of Jesus.

  19. I grew up doing what I wanted when I wanted. when I met Jesus that all changed. I went back to school for my GED, Bible college, and now seminary (praise be to Him). Yet, I still have a profound struggle striving for excellence. Any help I can get I appreciate. Thank you.

  20. As a rural pastor, I’m constantly challenged in ministry by a lack of excellence surrounding-it seems as though “good enough” is the norm. A book like this would be used in our ministry to develop the lay leadership to pursue excellence in all that we do both internally and externally from a Biblical perspective, rather than the pragmatic ‘how will this help get more people here’ perspective.

  21. I’d like to walk our church staff through the book as part of our weekly meetings.

  22. I would use the book to first challenge myself as I pursue a MDiv and secondly I would use the material as I teach my small group Bible study!

  23. True salvation is transformational. It’s incumbent upon us to be people for whom nothing short of excellence is our goal. I’d use the book to nurture and reinforce that in my own life and pass it along in community group Bible studies.

  24. Sounds like a good book to help us consider how we can honor God through our educational pursuits.

  25. I would like to read the book, first because as a Christian my pursuit of excellence is important and secondly because I wish to implement biblical excellence into my teaching at a small Bible college.

  26. I would like to read the book because I work in college ministry that focuses on calling young men and women to scholarly excellence in their field at a renowned university (UT Austin). This book would be a tremendous help to pastor and encourage a group of students at a university demanding nothing short of excellence.

  27. “…so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” Phil 1:10

  28. As a former student of Dr. Kostenberger I would use his new book to enhance my personal walk with Christ in order that I might better equip my congregation to do the work of the ministry.

  29. I am not sure how I would use it, but if I won it, I would definitely read it and try to figure it out.

  30. I enjoy reading, I hold that education can/does play a strong part in edifying and equipping the saints, and I love Jesus. Sounds like this book covers all these things and from what I have seen it would be a great read.

  31. I read the book when it came out, but with this opportunity, would love to give one to my RUF pastor. Having to deal with college students on a daily basis, the key focus of excellence–namely, imitating the Lord in all His ways–will play a big part in his ability to illustrate the ever profound attributes of God and our role as His image-bearer.

This is an excellent (pun-intended) resource and thankful for giveaways like this!

  32. As a newly married seminarian, learning how to manage my time between family, ministry, class, and life in general has been a challenge. I want to do well in all of those areas though, not because I want to say I did it, but in order to honor the Lord with what he has given me the opportunity to do. I feel like this book could be a catalyst, a helpful resource, and an encouragement as I attempt to do just that.

Also, I have conversations on a regular basis while at work (a coffee shop in N. Raleigh) with people who have no idea why I would pursue a degree such as an M.Div. I believe this book may provide some helpful ways to think about how I might answer that question to unbelievers and believers alike.

  33. Pastors always need more books. ;)

  34. I graduated from SEBTS and always appreciate and gain knowledge from the professors at Southeastern. Would love to read this book!

  35. Always willing to be challenged, so enter me in the book giveaway.

  36. I would love to use this book in my ministry of being a wife and mother. I would love to help encourage younger mothers to pursue excellence in a job that is 24/7- we must never tire of doing good!

  37. I would like to read this for personal growth to help me in my present and future ministry. I will also write a review, as I have been doing as a member of the blogging for books program, and place on sites like amazon, my personal blog, and cbd.

  38. For me, I always enjoy being encouraged and pushed in my walk with Christ and in ministry. Being complacent in ministry is a big danger in the 21st century church and Lord willing, this book can continue pushing me along in the right direction.

  39. I plan to use this book to better equip me for ministry, and for personal growth as I hope to pursue more scholastic endeavors in the future.

  40. Excellence is a theme that was burned into my would while I’m seminary, so this book will first be an excellent reminder for myself.
After that I would like to reference it while working to help 9th and 10th graders understand a biblical mandate for doing everything in life for his glory and with excellence.

  41. I hope to currently use this book in my home- as a wife, mother, sister, friend. Later, I hope to use the knowledge attained in the counseling field.
