thank you for this post. i find in preaching and teaching that even the most simple, biblically ignorant people can be moved toward solid application when the original intent of a passage is clearly stated in terms that they can relate to. they may not walk away with all the nuances of the text or have a grip on the possible theological implications that it may have, but if the time is taken to give an accurate setting and situation along with the author's intent, they will walk away capable of applying it accurately and directly to their lives.

Thank you for your post! The dangers of misapplication bind the consciences and have led many to heretical positions. One of my dearest friends disdains our church because we do not sell all our possessions and give to the poor. He thinks we are not faithfully following Jesus in this regard.

Your post clarifies some of the wrong roads to absolutize when it comes to applying Scripture. May Christ be treasured.

Have you read Daniel Doriani's book on the subject? I would be interested in hearing your take on it.

I primarily see the problem in the proclaimation of the Gospel. Jesus preached a coming Kingdom. His audience understood that Kingdom to be a literal, physical, social, political, temporal Kingdom over the entire Earth with Jerusalem at the center. Of this there is no question among learned men! Yet this is not at all what people are told in Church! I think that this does a great disservice, and disgraces our lord, the Messiah Jesus.
